Why is it important?
The world is already in the clean energy era and lithium is essential for humanity to face this change by reducing carbon emissions. This mineral is important for the so-called “energy transition.”
This mineral is widely recognized for its use in the manufacture of batteries, but its versatility extends to various materials, such as glass and ceramics, alloys for the aerospace industry and medication. This wide range of applications makes lithium a fundamental and strategic resource for the economy of many countries.
Though the largest lithium reserve is in Chile’s Salar de Atacama, this valuable metal can be found in several parts of the world.
Where is lithium in the world?
Lithium is found in rocks and salt flats in the earth’s crust. South America’s “Lithium triangle” (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile) concentrates 85% of the world’s reserves. Chile is the world’s second largest producer after Australia, with 29% of global production.
With its vast reserves and significant production, our country has the opportunity and responsibility to lead this transition, ensuring the protection of local communities and the ecosystem.
