Lithium production

It can be extracted from nature in two ways: from rocks or brine. For example, rock extraction predominates in Australia and brine in Chile.

Brine is a solution of water and mineral salts that can be found below the surface of salt flats. It is 7 times saltier than sea water. It cannot be used for human consumption or agriculture.

How does SQM currently produce lithium?

Measures are already being implemented to make production increasingly sustainable. SQM has a plan to reduce the extraction of brines and inland waters.
